It is a bit of a coincidence that we’re hosting  a weekend full of art events just after being named Charlotte’s  Best Artsy ‘hood by Charlotte Magazine. Pecha Kucha will kick things off on Thursday, Carolinas Got Art will be the highlight of the Friday Gallery Crawl and then…

South End’s signature arts festival will be held Saturday, May 2nd with events throughout the day!

From 12-6:00pm the Rail Trail will come alive with music, artists, retailers and all sorts of interesting things from BMX to spoken word and jazz.

We’ve got 25 independent artists lined up – selling original works of art at all price points. Lots of other great retailers will be out and about too, selling handmade goods ranging from jewelry, soap, birdhouses and other crafty wares. A nice lineup of fashion trucks will have the latest from the casual wear runway, and of course, there will be beer.

Check out some of the highlights:

Carolina Urban Lumber will be on East Kingston Avenue where they will have some pieces of wood with stories you can’t miss, as well as Treecycle America certified wood, harvested from our own tree canopy.

On Q Productions will be performing slam poetry and spoken word.

The Charlotte Folk Society will be performing with different acts all day at Sycamore Brewing Company.

The Charlotte Food Fight kicks off at 3:00pm lasting into the evening at 9:00pm – pitting 15 of Charlotte’s best food trucks against each other to benefit Relay for Life. Although everything else is free to attend – this event is pay to play (or eat).

Ready yet? If you want to kick things off early, check out Pecha Kucha at Amos’ South End on Thursday, May 30th. Some of Charlotte’s most intellectual artists will be on stage with the city’s most inspiring social leaders – presenting 20 slides – with only 20 seconds per slide. This is one of Charlotte’s most happening art events – don’t miss it!

Friday night’s treat is Carolinas Got Art at the Elder Gallery. This annual event invites artists from around the Carolinas to compete for over $10,000. With hundreds of entries, the field has been narrowed to just over 100 works by world famous guest juror – Eliza Rathbone. Come out on May 1st to view the winners and buy a piece or two!
