January Gallery CrawlJanuary 3, 2017 3:02 pm
New year, new art. Come check it out at the South End Gallery Crawl on Friday, January 6th!
On the first Friday of every month, neighborhood art galleries stay open late to host receptions for new exhibitions complete with wine, apps, music and an opportunity to meet the featured artists. The crawl kicks off at 5 PM and many of the locations will be open late into the evening, but each spot has individual hours of operation. Scroll down for location specific times.
Click on the Google Map below to see a full listing of participating fine art galleries and artsy South End destinations.
As always it’s free to participate… unless you fall in love… Happy crawling!

- Magnolia Emporium open until 9:00 pm
- C3 Lab Gallery open until 10:00 pm
- Studio Cellar open until 11:00 pm
Hidell Brooks Gallery – 1910 South Blvd. Suite 130, 6-8 PM
Hidell Brooks Gallery will host an opening reception for two artists this month. Sally King Benedict‘s show “New Paintings” features abstract oil paintings while Virginia Scotchie‘s show “Around the World” features colorful, symmetrical, ceramic objects. More pictures are available on the Hidell Brooks blog.
Lady M Cake Boutique – 1320 S Church St, 6-8:30 PM
Located in the spot previously home to The Gallery South End, Lady M Cake Boutique joins the January Gallery Crawl for the first time this week! The new exhibition “Strokes of Color” features work by artists Anne Strutz, Terry Davis, and Kurt Weiser.
Ciel Gallery – 128 E Park Ave, 6-9 PM
The resident artists of Ciel Gallery invite you to enjoy food, drink, and an opening reception for “Gimme Shelter,” a national juried show featuring the animals we love- whether real, imaginary or fantasy. Donations will be accepted for the Humane Society of Charlotte while the exhibition runs through January 26th. Bonus: if you’re feeling inspired to create something then sign up for a workshop while you’re there!
Artists featured below (clockwise from top left): Diane Pike, Jean Cauthen, Patricia Mariano, Ann Ruel, Sally Rydalch, and Meg Green-Malvasi
Magnolia Emporium – 307 Lincoln St, 6-9 PM
Magnolia Emporium is an interior design and home decor hub owned by Randolph James, a long time designer for celebrities and international home owners. There’s also a bounty of one-of-a-kind gifts to be found here (ranging from candles and mermaid pillows to spiced nuts and artisan soaps), so drop in for food, drink, shopping and art by featured artist Elisa Lopez from 6-9 PM.
C3 Lab – 2525 Distribution Street, 7-10 PM
From 7-10pm, C3 Lab will host an opening reception for two new exhibits by local artist Lara Americo from 7-10pm. First up, Chrysalis uses photography and 3-D molding to explore what it means to inhabit a human body and navigate the world in these bodies.
Secondly, the Trans & Queer in the Workplace series spotlights Charlotte’s trans and gender non-conforming community, photographing individuals in their work environment and quoting their thoughts on their work experiences- a la Humans of New York. Both shows will be on view through January 23rd.
Finally, there will be a live musical performance from Americo’s latest EP release She/They (is there anything she can’t do??). Don’t miss out!
Studio Cellar – 1800 Camden Rd, 7-11 PM
If all this fine art has your creative juices flowing, try your hand at painting in Studio Cellar! South End’s freestyle-painting-studio-meets-wine-bar will have light snacks, music and an instructor-led class to paint “Poppin Bottles” at 7:30 pm (finished product featured below).
A Southern Girl’s Gotta Have It
One more thing, keep an eye out for for some unusual characters on the crawl… word has it that stars from A Southern Girl’s Gotta Have It (an upcoming comedy production at C3 Lab) will be participating in character!
