Your personal South End craft beer adventure is now at hand. The “Randomizer” tool from the South End Craft Beer Map is just one way to explore what the neighborhood has brewing.
Craft beer has become the star of festivals and events in South End, including the Craft Crawl and Hops Fest, the monthly Suffolk Punch Beer Dinner, Food Truck Fridays, running and yoga clubs, and endless special events and tours hosted by area breweries. There’s never a need to wait for a special occasion to sample the new flavors brewing here, but Friday, August 2–International Beer Day–is a ready excuse.
A little history to go with your pint: In the 1890s, the corridor between South Boulevard and the railroad tracks sprang up as the city’s first industrial park. These industrial origins, along with changes to city zoning rules in 2013 and 2014, created the perfect environment for breweries: in the old zoning rules, craft breweries were considered an industrial use and were only permitted in industrial zones. Fast-forward to today, and the neighborhood is home to six locally-owned craft breweries and many more bottle shops, bars and restaurants that take pride in the curated craft brews on tap.
Fun fact: supporting local beer means 90 cents of every dollar spent stays in North Carolina and keeps your friendly neighborhood servers and brewers employed in a thriving industry.
Now that you are fully educated, make plans! If the Randomizer is too random, the South End Craft Beer Map also offers customized routes whether you prefer to cruise the light rail, find the most Insta-worthy spots or make it all about the games (XL Jenga, anyone?). There’s even a key to help you narrow down your choices by favorite feature, say some live music or non-beer alternatives like wine or kombucha.
Regardless of how you get there, or what day of the week you choose, you will likely find a dynamic mix of residents and visitors; couples, co-workers and families; dogs and babies, all enjoying the brewery life in harmony.
