Community Meeting Recap: September 24, 2019

Meeting Notes:

Moment of History

Historian Michael Sullivan described the creation of the Charlotte and South Carolina railroad. When Raleigh declined to fund construction of the railroad, a creative partnership of local visionaries raised local funds and built a partnership with municipalities in South Carolina, particularly the Columbia, to build the railroad. It opened in 1852 and quickly changed the fortunes of the city, attracting trade, investment and manufacturing along the line. Today’s light rail line lies along the exact same route.

APA-NC Great Street Award

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association awarded the Charlotte Rail Trail the group’s Great Street Award. The award recognizes the state’s greatest urban places. Jessica Hill, presenting the award, described the Rail Trail as a wonderful gathering place for community events, residents and visitors alike.

I-277 Rail Trail + Pedestrian Bridge

Construction for the bridge that will connect the Rail Trail between South End and Uptown is expected to start in mid-2021 with a project completion date around late 2022.

The project is funded through a unique public-private partnership.

U.S. Bank is the presenting sponsor for the project and their commitment will be combined with other private funders including Whole Foods/Asana Partners, Crescent and Portman.

Major funding for the project is also backed by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the State of NC.

Charlotte Center City Partners and the City of Charlotte are leading an effort to set the vision for the next 20 years of development in our downtown, called the 2040 Center City Vision Plan.
